£35.00

Ready to Make the Move from Top Roping to Lead Climbing?

Are you comfortable climbing on a top rope but keen to learn how to lead? Perhaps you've watched other climbers clipping quickdraws and leading routes and wondered how to get started yourself.

Or maybe you've already tried leading but would like to improve your technique, build confidence and develop better habits.

This practical, two-hour session at Energise Climbing Wall in York is designed to help you take the next step in your climbing journey.

Working in a small group, you'll have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of indoor lead climbing, practise essential techniques and develop a better understanding of the skills needed to lead and belay safely.

Whether you're preparing to try leading for the first time or looking to improve skills you've already started learning, the session will be tailored to your experience and ability.

What Will You Learn?

We'll cover the essential skills and techniques involved in indoor lead climbing, including:

  • Understanding lead climbing: How it differs from top-rope climbing and what you need to consider when leading.

  • Clipping quickdraws: Practising clipping techniques and understanding common clipping mistakes.

  • Rope management: Learning to handle the rope efficiently and avoid common errors.

  • Fall potential: Understanding how falls can occur and how clipping positions affect safety.

  • Lead belaying: Developing an understanding of rope control, giving out rope and taking in slack appropriately.

  • Communication: Using clear, effective communication between climber and belayer.

  • Recognising common mistakes: Understanding issues such as back-clipping and z-clipping, and how to avoid them.

  • Building confidence: Developing good habits and learning how to approach lead climbing with greater awareness.

We'll break the skills down into manageable steps, demonstrate techniques and give you time to practise in a controlled climbing-wall environment.

The aim is to help you understand the techniques, recognise potential hazards and develop the skills needed to progress towards lead climbing independently.
