Learn to Lead Trad Climbing Courses in Yorkshire & the District
Learn to Climb Trad Outdoors
If you've got experience on an indoor wall and you're ready to find out what climbing on natural rock is really like, learning to trad climb is a big step forward.
Trad climbing gives you a completely different way of approaching a route. Instead of clipping fixed protection, you're responsible for deciding where to place your own gear and how to protect the climb as you go.
That can feel like a lot to take in at first. Our trad climbing courses in Yorkshire and the Peak District are designed to give you time to learn the systems properly, practise them on real rock and gradually build your confidence.
You might be looking to climb your first trad routes, improve your outdoor skills or work towards leading for yourself. Whatever your starting point, we'll talk through your experience before the course and make a plan for the day.
Choose the Course That Suits You
We offer several options depending on how much time you'd like to spend developing your climbing:
1-day private trad climbing course
2-day private trad climbing course
5-day private trad climbing course
2-day open group trad courses on selected dates
If you want to spend several days developing your skills, we can also put together a bespoke multi-day course rather than trying to fit everything into a fixed programme.
Not sure whether one, two or five days makes sense for you? Get in touch and we'll help you work it out.
What You'll Learn
Trad climbing involves much more than carrying a rack of gear up a crag. You'll learn how the different pieces fit together and, most importantly, how to make sensible decisions while climbing.
Depending on your experience, we can work on:
Identifying and placing nuts, cams, hexes and other traditional protection
Understanding the strengths and limitations of different placements
Building and checking appropriate climbing belays
Tying in and managing the rope
Belaying a lead climber safely
Choosing suitable routes for your ability
Placing protection while climbing
Improving movement on natural rock
Techniques including jamming, smearing
Preparing for your first trad lead
Managing the rope and equipment while leading
Abseiling and using a Prusik backup
Basic rescue and problem-solving skills
Using guidebooks to choose and plan routes
Understanding local climbing etiquette and how to minimise your impact on the crag
You'll get plenty of time to handle the equipment and practise the skills, rather than spending the whole day listening to someone explain them.
Want to Lead Trad?
If your goal is to become a trad leader, we'll focus on the decisions you'll eventually need to make for yourself.
That includes assessing the rock, selecting suitable protection, building belays, managing the rope, communicating with your partner and knowing when a placement or route is appropriate.
We'll work progressively, giving you the opportunity to practise each part before bringing everything together on suitable climbs.
The aim isn't simply to show you how to place a piece of gear. It's to help you understand why you're placing it there and how it forms part of a safe climbing system.
Where We Run Our Trad Courses
We regularly climb at crags throughout Yorkshire and the Peak District, with the exact venue chosen according to the course, your experience and the conditions.
Places we use include:
Almscliff · Brimham Rocks · Wainstones · Scugdale · Hathersage · Strange Edge · Burbage · and other local crags
If you already have a particular crag or route in mind, tell us when you enquire. We can look at whether it is suitable for your experience and what you want to learn.
For longer or more advanced trips, multi-pitch climbing can also be arranged in the Lake District or Wales.
Learn to Lead Trad — 2 Day Course
Our two-day course is aimed at climbers who want to develop the skills needed to progress towards leading traditional routes.
Having two days means there's time to learn, practise, climb and then come back to anything that needs another look.

Teaching time: Approximately 6 hours per day
Price: £600 for up to 2 people

Sometimes one day is enough to concentrate on a particular skill. Other climbers want several days to properly build towards leading.
Our private courses are available as:
1 day · 2 days · 5 days
Longer courses can give you the opportunity to climb at more than one venue, experience different types of rock and spend more time putting your skills into practice.
We can also arrange a bespoke multi-day programme if you have a particular goal in mind.
Who Are Trad Courses For?
You may be ready for a trad course if you:
Have mainly climbed indoors and want to move outside
Have climbed outdoors as a second and want to develop your independence
Want to understand traditional protection properly
Want more experience building belays and managing ropes
Are preparing to lead trad routes
Want to become more confident making decisions at the crag
Simply want to spend more time learning on real rock
If you're unsure whether your current experience is suitable, ask us before booking. We'd much rather have a conversation first and put you on the right course.
Under 18s
Anyone under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present throughout the course.
They don't have to take part in the climbing, but they must remain with the group.

FAQs
-
We provide safety equipment: harness, helmet, ropes, hardware and technical kit. Climbing shoes can be provided if needed. You’re welcome to bring any of your old gear to the session.
Please bring a rucksack, tracksuit or warm top, waterproofs, trainers or walking boots, govers, hat and food and drink for the day. In summer bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and shorts. Weather can change quickly, so pack layers and extra kit to keep you warm and dry.
-
We don’t cancel a session because of bad weather — there’s always something to try, learn, or experience. However, if the forecast is dangerous or unsafe, we will rearrange the session.
-
As climbing is an adventurous activity, we believe it is best experienced without bringing dogs along with you.
Dogs can be unpredictable in busy crags, on narrow paths and near exposed edges. They may startle other climbers, distract handlers who need full concentration, or put themselves at risk on loose rock and steep terrain. Many climbing routes require careful footwork, the ability to move freely and the use of both hands — situations in which managing a dog safely is impractical.
-
Bookings are taken up to 48 hours before your session. Your place is confirmed once payment has been received.
Please note:
Bookings made within 48 hours of the session cannot be guaranteed.
Payment must be completed at the time of booking (reseaving the invoie) to secure your slot.
Cancellations and refunds are subject to our standard terms.

Where We Climb
Yorkshire, the Peak District, the Lake District and North Wales give us an incredible choice of outdoor climbing.
From Yorkshire gritstone and Peak District edges to limestone crags and the bigger mountain venues further north and into Wales, there's a huge variety of rock, routes and climbing styles to choose from.
We don't use the same venue for every session. The crag we choose will depend on what you want to climb, your experience, the type of session we're running and, of course, the weather.
Some of the venues we regularly visit include:
Almscliff Crag
Brimham Rocks
Stanage Edge
Horseshoe Quarry
Wainstones
Scugdale
Burbage
Strange Edge
Shepherd's Crag
and other crags across the region
Whether you're trying outdoor climbing for the first time, developing your skills or have a particular route in mind, we'll choose a venue where you can get the most out of your day.
If there's a particular crag you'd like to visit, let us know when you enquire. We'll look at your experience, the climbing you're hoping to do and the current conditions before deciding whether it's the right choice.
