Outdoor Bouldering Courses in Yorkshire & the Peak District
Take Your Bouldering Outside
Enjoy bouldering indoors and fancy trying something different?
Outdoor bouldering is a chance to leave the climbing wall behind and start working with real rock, natural features and problems that aren't marked out for you.
Instead of coloured holds and numbered routes, you'll need to look at the rock, work out where the holds are and decide how you're going to climb the problem. That's a big part of what makes outdoor bouldering so enjoyable.
Our outdoor bouldering courses in Yorkshire and the Peak District are suitable for a wide range of abilities. You might be completely new to climbing outside, or you may already have plenty of indoor experience and want some help improving your outdoor technique.
We'll find out what you've done before the session and use that as a starting point.
What We'll Do
The day is mainly about getting outside and climbing, but we'll also cover the skills that help you boulder safely and confidently.
Depending on your experience, we can work on:
Moving efficiently over natural rock
Reading a boulder problem before you start
Understanding outdoor bouldering grades
Choosing problems that suit your ability
Spotting and positioning crash pads
Understanding how to fall safely
Using guidebooks to find boulders and problems
Finding your way around a new bouldering area
Improving footwork, balance and body positioning
Working out sequences when you're stuck on a problem
Trying different climbing techniques on different types of rock
Looking after the rock, vegetation and surrounding area
We'll explain things as we go rather than turning the day into a classroom session.
You'll spend plenty of time climbing, trying problems and figuring out what works for you.
New to Outdoor Bouldering?
You don't need to be an expert climber to come along.
If you've never climbed outside before, we'll start with the basics: how outdoor bouldering works, how to use the pads, how to spot safely and how to approach problems at a suitable level.
If you've already got experience, we can spend more time on technique, problem solving, route reading or working harder problems.
The course isn't about forcing everyone through the same list of exercises. We'll use your existing climbing experience to decide what will be most useful on the day.
Yorkshire & Peak District Bouldering
We use a selection of outdoor bouldering areas across Yorkshire and the Peak District, choosing the venue according to your experience, the type of climbing you want to do and the conditions.
Venues can include:
Almscliff · Brimham Rocks · Caley Crag · Stange Plantation · Burbage · and other local bouldering areas
If you've got a particular venue in mind, tell us when you enquire. We'll consider whether it's suitable for the group and the type of session you're looking for.
Learn More Than Just How to Climb the Problem
One of the biggest differences between indoor and outdoor bouldering is everything that happens between the problems.
We'll help you get familiar with things such as:
Finding problems: Using guidebooks and understanding how outdoor areas are laid out.
Grades: Getting a feel for outdoor grades and why they don't always compare directly with indoor grades.
Spotting: Learning where a spotter should stand and how to help protect a climber during a fall.
Pads: Understanding where and how to position crash pads, including what to consider when the landing isn't flat.
The environment: Learning how to climb responsibly and leave the area in good condition for the next people.
These skills help you become more independent and make future outdoor bouldering trips easier and more enjoyable.

You'll be outside for several hours, so come prepared for the conditions.
We recommend bringing:
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely
Waterproofs and warm layers
Suitable footwear for walking between boulders
Plenty of food and water
Sun protection when appropriate
Outdoor bouldering can involve walking over uneven ground, so sensible footwear is important.
We'll also keep an eye on the forecast and choose the most suitable venue for the conditions.
Under 18s
Anyone under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present throughout the session.
They don't need to take part in the climbing, but they must remain with the group.
Ready to Try Outdoor Bouldering?
If you've spent years climbing indoors or you're just starting out, outdoor bouldering gives you a completely different set of challenges.
Tell us about your climbing experience, who you'd like to come with you and what you'd like to get from the session. We'll help you choose a suitable venue and course.
FAQs
-
We provide safety equipment: harness, helmet, ropes, hardware and technical kit. Climbing shoes can be provided if needed. You’re welcome to bring any of your old gear to the session.
Please bring a rucksack, tracksuit or warm top, waterproofs, trainers or walking boots, govers, hat and food and drink for the day. In summer bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and shorts. Weather can change quickly, so pack layers and extra kit to keep you warm and dry.
-
We don’t cancel a session because of bad weather — there’s always something to try, learn, or experience. However, if the forecast is dangerous or unsafe, we will rearrange the session.
-
As climbing is an adventurous activity, we believe it is best experienced without bringing dogs along with you.
Dogs can be unpredictable in busy crags, on narrow paths and near exposed edges. They may startle other climbers, distract handlers who need full concentration, or put themselves at risk on loose rock and steep terrain. Many climbing routes require careful footwork, the ability to move freely and the use of both hands — situations in which managing a dog safely is impractical.

Bookings are taken up to 48 hours before your session. Your place is confirmed once payment has been received.
Please note:
Bookings made within 48 hours of the session cannot be guaranteed.
Payment must be completed at the time of booking (reseaving the invoie) to secure your slot.
Cancellations and refunds are subject to our standard terms.

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) Participation Statement states that climbing, hill walking, and mountaineering involve a risk of personal injury or death. Participants must recognize, accept these risks, and be responsible for their own actions and safety. It is a core tenet for managing risks in these activities.

Where We Climb
Yorkshire, the Peak District, the Lake District and North Wales give us an incredible choice of outdoor climbing.
From Yorkshire gritstone and Peak District edges to limestone crags and the bigger mountain venues further north and into Wales, there's a huge variety of rock, routes and climbing styles to choose from.
We don't use the same venue for every session. The crag we choose will depend on what you want to climb, your experience, the type of session we're running and, of course, the weather.
Some of the venues we regularly visit include:
Almscliff Crag
Brimham Rocks
Stanage Edge
Horseshoe Quarry
Wainstones
Scugdale
Burbage
Strange Edge
Shepherd's Crag
and other crags across the region
Whether you're trying outdoor climbing for the first time, developing your skills or have a particular route in mind, we'll choose a venue where you can get the most out of your day.
If there's a particular crag you'd like to visit, let us know when you enquire. We'll look at your experience, the climbing you're hoping to do and the current conditions before deciding whether it's the right choice.
