Climbers Self-Rescue Training – Energise Climbing Wall, York
What Would You Do If Something Went Wrong When Climbing?
You're halfway up a multi-pitch route. Your partner gets injured, a climber becomes stuck on a pitch, or you need to retreat from a route that suddenly feels beyond your comfort zone.
Would you know what to do?
Self-rescue skills can make a real difference when things don't go to plan. This practical evening session at Energise Climbing Wall in York will help you develop the knowledge and techniques needed to manage common climbing problems using the equipment you can realistically carry with you.
Whether you're new to self-rescue or an experienced climber looking to refresh skills you haven't used for a while, this session offers an opportunity to learn and practise in a controlled environment.
What Will You Learn?
Depending on the group's experience and the time available, we'll cover practical techniques such as:
Escaping a belay system.
Managing abseils and passing a knot.
Ascending and descending a rope.
Building simple hauling systems.
Understanding how to lower or assist a climber in appropriate scenarios.
Exploring options for retreating from a route.
Making effective use of your existing climbing equipment.
Thinking through problems and making sensible decisions under pressure.
I'll demonstrate the techniques, give you time to practise, and introduce practical scenarios to help you understand how and when these systems might be used.
The emphasis is on understanding the systems, developing good judgement and learning how to solve problems — not simply memorising a sequence of moves.
Who Is It For?
This session is suitable for outdoor climbers who want to improve their ropework, build confidence and become better prepared for unexpected situations.
It's ideal if you:
Climb trad or multi-pitch sport routes.
Want to develop your self-rescue knowledge.
Have learned these skills before but need a refresher.
Want to improve your understanding of rope systems.
Are working towards further climbing qualifications or developing your instructing skills.
You should already be familiar with basic climbing and belaying techniques. This is not an introduction to climbing.
