EDELRID OHMEGA

We recently purchased the Ohmega climbing device from the Big Depot in Manchester and have been using it extensively at several climbing walls and training environments. After a good period of testing, I wanted to share some feedback based on real use in different settings.

The device has been used for personal climbing, group sessions, and instructor training for staff at Big Depot Leeds, Energise Sports Centre, and Base71. Across all of these environments it has performed really well and has proven to be a valuable addition to our kit.

One of the main reasons we wanted to try the Ohmega was its potential for adaptive and inclusive climbing. We have tested it both for lead climbing and top rope belaying where the climber is in a wheelchair, and it has worked extremely well. It provides a noticeable reduction in effective load for the belayer, which makes it much easier to manage situations where there is a significant weight difference or where additional control is needed for assisted climbing.

The device has also been very useful during staff instructor training, allowing us to demonstrate and practise different assisted belay techniques in a controlled way. It adds a useful tool when teaching staff how to manage climbers with different needs or large weight differences.

Outside the wall environment, we also used the Ohmega while sport climbing in Leonidio with a friend who is significantly taller and heavier than me. In that scenario the device really came into its own β€” the catch felt controlled and comfortable, and it removed the usual concerns around a big weight difference between climber and belayer.

Overall, the Ohmega is an excellent device for climbing walls, instructor training, and inclusive climbing setups. It’s simple to integrate into existing systems and provides a practical solution for weight differences and adaptive climbing scenarios. Based on our experience so far, we would definitely recommend it to climbing walls, instructors, and sports climbers looking to make belaying safer and more accessible.
